old time radio

“Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you… Escape!”

During a portion of an ongoing recovery from a pelvic and spine condition, I spent some large chunks of time in bed. It was during this time that I begin to delve into old time radio. I often have a difficult time trying to listen to audiobooks…my mind wanders and soon I’ve missed several paragraphs. Also, unlike reading, it’s not easy to just stop and think about what I’ve read or go back and re-read sections or sentences before moving on. At any rate, I found I could listen to and enjoy a wide variety of old radio shows. I was surprised at the quality of some of the  writing and acting. After a while I began to recognize various actors by their voices. All in all, it was a lot of fun and something I still dip into occasionally. Here are some I’ve listened to:

  • Cloak and Dagger (listened to all 22 available episodes)
  • Dragnet (listened to a whole bunch of episodes)
  • Escape! (listened to a majority of episodes)
  • Frontier Gentleman (listened to all 41 available episodes)
  • Gunsmoke (listened to a whole bunch of episodes)
  • Have Gun, Will Travel
  • The Six Shooter (listened to all 40 available episodes)
  • Richard Diamond, Private Detective
  • Space Patrol
  • Tales of the Texas Rangers (listened to all 92 available episodes)
  • Tarzan Lord of the Jungle (listened to all 75 available episodes)
  • X Minus One (listened to a majority of episodes)
  • Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar
  • Box 13

If you’d like to explore some old time radio entertainment but don’t know where to look for recordings, a great place to start is the Old Time Radio collection at the Internet Archive.

“Adventure wanted – will go anywhere, do anything – write Box 13, Star-Times.”
