Here’s another belated book jot, from September 2021:
I finished reading Home Front by Joel Rosenberg (2003). It’s categorized as mystery fiction, but is very light on mystery. I read a series of fantasy novels by this author when I was in my early teens and recently came across this book. It takes place in a familiar region, and that added a layer of personal interest.
The main character narrates the story, which chronicles an out of the ordinary couple of weeks in his normally uneventful, small-town life. He has a pretty distinct narrative voice, marked by an acerbity that fails to conceal a warmth for those he loves.
The story has some interesting characters, seriously cold weather, a blizzard, a few guns, and even some dynamite, but it’s ultimately about doing whatever is needed to take care of those people one considers family.
